The first one was held on January 15, 1967.
The supreme match has a rich history, starting with the first matchup in January 1967 featuring the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and broadcast on two television networks, fans watched the Packers defeat the Chiefs, 35-10.
Since then, it has evolved into one of the most-watched sporting events in the world. With more than 100 million viewers tuning in each year, the pro football championship has become a major event for more than die-hard fans.
There is only one main event that doesn’t feature Roman numerals.
Since The Big Game in 1971, Roman numerals have been used in the official name. The idea is credited to Lamar Hunt, who owned the Kansas City Chiefs at the time. The switch to Roman numerals was even reflected retroactively in the first four games.
In fact, the 50th matchup is the only one since 1971 without Roman numerals.
More than 100 footballs will be used during the game.
Each competing team receives 108 footballs, 54 are used for practice and the remaining 54 are for the game. Approximately 120 balls are typically used in The Big Showdown.

To put the commercial craze in perspective, the first event’s commercials that aired in 1967 cost about $40,000, equivalent to about $377,970 today. According to reports, 30-second ads for this year’s event are estimated to be at least $7 million!
The host city for the 2025 Supreme Match is New Orleans.
This year’s game will be at Caesars Superdome, home to the NFL’s Saints. New Orleans will have hosted the Gridiron Confrontation 11 times after this year’s game. This will tie them with Miami as the city to host it the most.
The halftime show comes with high expectations.
In 1993, when Michael Jackson performed, it was a halftime show game-changer. His performance had it all—special effects, pyrotechnics, backup dancers, an elaborate stage and a big name to back it up. Another iconic halftime performance was in 2007. This is when Prince gave an electrifying performance in the rain in Miami.
Joining the long list of talent to appear at The Big Game’s halftime show is Kendrick Lamar. Lamar is performing at this year’s main event.
