March 5th, 2025
With football championships wrapped up for the season and college basketball at its peak in the season, a month full of basketball is here. Find out what you need to know about the upcoming tournaments.
Why is March a big basketball month?
Let’s take a closer look at the madness of March basketball tournaments.
Popular among college men’s basketball fans, the tournaments that take place this month are not just men’s basketball tournaments. This tournament refers to the time in March when all the college basketball tournaments are held at the same time, specifically the men’s and women’s D-1 tournaments.
Furthermore, the men’s and women’s D-1 tournaments determine the year’s national champion as well as the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
When does the tournament start?
With that being said, here are all the important dates for all this mad month holds.
The month tips off with selection day on March 16, this is when the participants for the men’s and women’s tournaments will be announced. NIT invitations are then sent to schools that did not earn a spot.
On Tuesday, March 18, the games for the men’s tournament will begin, with the first women’s games being played on Wednesday, March 19. These games are the qualifiers that then determine the 16 seeds for each bracket.
The NIT will be played simultaneously, beginning on March 18.
When is the tournament over?
With it being a month full of basketball, games will be held over the course of three weekends leading up to the national title game. These tournaments typically take about three weeks to complete.
For the men’s tournament, the last game will be played on Monday, April 7, while the women’s final game is set for Sunday, April 6. The final NIT game will be played on Thursday, April 3.
