With the best-of-three Wild Card Series complete, the Division Series leading up to the World Series starts tomorrow, followed by the League Championship Series on Sunday, October 13. Before heading into the final throws of the season, expand your knowledge with these interesting facts about the World Series. 

This is the third year of the 12-team postseason format.

In 2022, a third Wild Card spot was established, making the total number of postseason teams 12. The Wild Card Series returned as a best-of-three, with all three games played at the higher seed’s home field.

As of 2023, the American League has won 68 World Series championships, while the National League has won 51.

Out of the 119 World Series, more American League teams have walked away with the sterling silver Commissioner’s Trophy. 

The first World Series was in 1903 when the Boston Americans faced the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Now the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in this match-up. But instead of playing a best-of-seven series like today, the Boston Americans won a best-of-nine series, winning five games to three.

The New York Yankees have the most World Series championships with 27 wins. The St. Louis Cardinals come in second with 11.

Unsurprisingly, the New York Yankees have the most World Series championships since they have played in about 35% of the World Series championships with 40 appearances, winning 23% of the time with 27 titles.

The World Series has been canceled twice.

In 1904, the World Series didn’t happen because the New York Giants refused to play the Boston Americans due to animosity between the Giants manager and the American League president. New rules were established the following year to prevent that situation from happening again.

However, in 1994, the World Series was canceled for a second time because of a players’ strike. 

The first no-hitter in World Series history was in 1956. 

It took 53 years before the first no-hitter occurred in the World Series, which is one of the interesting facts about the World Series we find memorable!

In October 1956, the New York Yankees faced the Brooklyn Dodgers. During Game 5, Yankees pitcher, Don Larsen, pitched a perfect game. The Yankees won 2-0! 

Only 40 of the World Series championships have lasted the full seven games. 

The first time the series played all seven games was in 1909 when the winning Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers in Game 7, 8-0. Most recently, all seven games were played in 2019 when the Washington Nationals beat the Houston Astros 6-2.
