Celebrate November’s National Sports Days
November 5th, 2024Did you know that November is host to two national sports days? It is! Get out, suit up and celebrate November’s national sports days with these tips, especially since one is today!
National American Football Day
We celebrate National American Football Day on November 5, the middle of the NFL season. But why is it called National American Football Day and not just National Football Day?
For clarity’s sake, people worldwide can celebrate our version of football with this distinction instead of soccer, known as football outside of the U.S.A. Let’s take a quick look at the history of this day!
In the late 1800s, rugby and soccer paved the way for American football. After the first game in 1869 between Rutgers University and the College of New Jersey, college football took off before the NFL. The National Football League officially began in 1920. Currently, there are two conferences and 32 NFL teams.
How can you celebrate? Grab your friends and participate in an American football game. You can host a watch party and cheer on your favorite team or watch your favorite football movies. And that’s not all! Don’t forget to play your football video games or check in on your fantasy football team!
What’s more? You can educate yourself on the safety aspect of fitting football equipment according to the manufacturer’s guidelines by exploring HelmetFitting.com’s eLearning services.
National Basketball Day
Another one of November’s national sports days is celebrated the next day. National Basketball Day observes one of the most popular sports in the U.S.A. on November 6.
This sport can be played indoors or outdoors at community parks, gyms and in the driveway! All you need is a hoop and a ball. But why do we celebrate this day on November 6? This day commemorates James Naismith’s birthday, a physical educator who developed basketball for indoor winter recreation for his students.
The first professional league, the National Basketball League, was founded in 1898. Introduced in St. Louis, Missouri, as a demonstration sport during the 1904 Summer Olympics, it was later made an official sport in Berlin, Germany, at the 1936 Summer Olympics. In 1976, it was designated as a female Olympic sport.
So how can you celebrate this day? Lace-up your shoes and head to the court! Play this game in person or video game form. Or, you can watch your favorite NBA teams play. In addition, you can brush up on your basketball knowledge by learning more about the equipment they use with HelmetFitting.com’s Basketball Equipment Fitting Guide.
